Thanks for the info.

CAV? Yes, what you say seems to make sense and something I hadn't
considered, the only thing is, on loading a Philips DVD+R, I only have a
choice of 2 speeds - 6x & 8x and I've tried both without success.

NEC 3540s? Let's hope I can get my PC builder to change my LiteOn for a NEC
under guarantee!
