The HP DVD/CD 300c burner that came with my computer is acting strange.
It has stopped working with some (but not all) of the CD-burning software
I use (specifically WinOn CD 5, which up to now had no problems) for
burning any data or audio. I can still use NTI Cd-Maker 6 to burn data.
Whe it does not work for audio I either get write error messsages or burner
underrun (where the data is not being supplied quickly enough) depending
on the software I am trying to use. Data looks like it writes properly
and just isn't there when I check the disc.
As for DVDs, on an irregular basis DVD X Copy "simple" has stopped
coppying menues (including scene access) and special fetures, while the
Platinum version (copy by selection titles) will do this. What copies,
plays without problems, and that's all I want is something so I don't have
to risk the original, but it's annoying.
I have not installed any new software lateley.
I unistalled and reistalled WinOn CD 5 twice, just to be sure it had not
become corrupted. The computer is an HP a305n using XP with 512 MB RAM
and a 2.8 Pentium 4.
Since this all seems centered around the burner, could it be the problem?

Ps HP is not very good about helping with an out-of-warranty computer,
but before that expired I asked about firmware updates. I found a patch
that made it work better with 8X media, but they advised not screwing
around if I didn't have to. I don't know who actually makes the burner.
