What you want to do is not simple if you do it properly. You need what
is called "authoring" software.
The easiest way to copy a DVD that exceeds the space on a single layer
disc is to use DVD Shrink to compress and DVD Decrypter to burn. You
can do an amazing amount of compression and still preserve acceptable
resolution for conventional composite TVs. You can ever do a small
amount of re-authoring, but you will lose your menus, so if you must
preserve menus from the original, then you can't re-author.
There are a bunch of re-authoring tools, and each has its following.
None of them work worth a crap compared to professional tools, but
then the individual can't afford professional tools. So you make do.
The biggest problem is audio sync. Mpegs can lose sync in the
authoring process. If the tools you use have a two-pass capability,
then you have to use that to preserve audio sync, but two-pass takes a
lot of time.
Some people use Ulead MovieFactory 4 (MF4) but it can screw up the
audio unless you export the clip with two-pass. Once you have the
export on disk you can reuse it and not pay the penalty of having to
rerender the clip.
But the time to render is unacceptable for movie length clips. An hour
of video can take 12-24 hours to render. That's why people who want to
backup their DVDs use DVD Shrink, which takes at most 15-30 minutes
per 2 hour video.
Because of the incredible greed of the entertainment and media
industry you need to consult the laws to make sure you are not
violating any copyright restrictions.
