I have a unencrypted DVD that I wish to backup to my HD to be able to play
it from the HD without using the DVD. This is in Windows XP.
Because I need to back it up in files of 700MB (not 1GB, I have my reasons),
I am using DVD decrypt which in IFO mode allows me to back up the DVD in VOB
files of 700 MB. Since there are several of segments (PGC 1, 2, 3, etc.) on
the DVD which I am backing up, decrypt asks me each time if I want to rename
the output VOB file and the IFO file or to overwrite the earlier ones and of
course I say rename them.
Now, I know nothing about VOB, IFO files etc. I noticed that some of the
produced VOB files are 700 MB and others are 44 KB. I presume they contain
the left over info. What is the difference between the created IFO files and
their similarly named VOB files.
What is a PGC segment?
**I do not intend to ever re-create a DVD from this backup. They are just
for me to replay from the HD. I noticed that if I move just a VOB file by
itself to another directory and double click on it it runs just fine by
itself. So do I need to keep all the associated 102KB IFO files and the PLS
files that Decrypt has created or can I just keep the VOB files alone for my
purposes.
What are they for anyway since the VOB files work fine by themselves?
Thanks.
