Old Boy is Totally Confused

My JVC DVD recorder, a DR-MV1S is a -R recorder.
I burn a Memorex disc and finalize it from any HBO surround movie.

It plays back beautifully including the surround sound using the
'recording machine'.

BUT, when attempting to play this very same disc on my JVC
Xv-NP10S DVD player/memory card reader machine in another
room~~ Great picture~~ No surround sound ~~ No stereo
sound; just mono sound straight from the center speaker.

Do I need to purchase another DVD player?
If so, please point me to a machine that will play my recorded movies
with surround sound.

Would a "Panasonic DVD-S77S DVD Player" do the job? It is
available from Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007XXU34/ref=pd_cps_e_1/103-4705742-8475047?v=glance&s=electronicsfor a
very good price.

Many thanks for your time in reading this and hopefully answering an old
mans
questions.
