Do not top post. It is the sign of a newbie.

Don't just get a "different brand" - all of those "different brands"
are crap with one major exception: Taiyo Yuden. Even Verbatim, number
two rated on CDFreaks

is now having problems because Mitsubishi is not controlling the
quality of its outsource plants.
TY is made in Japan by TY. It is the best you can buy. But it is
expensive unless you know where to look.

You can get TY rebrands if you know what you are doing. Lurk that
forum for details. For example FujiFilm MIJ is a rebrand of TY02 (+R).
There are a few others.
Best stick with genuine Taiyo Yuden. The prices on those two sites are
the best you are going to find anywhere for genuine TY.
OK, now that we have that matter clarified, you still have to decide
whether your burner operates best on +R or -R and on 16x or 8x. For
example, my NEC 3540 operates best with +R and I like 8x because they
I can get them at Best Buy for $35 rebranded as Fuji MIJ. DO NOT get
the MIT version since it is not TY. I burn at 8x.
My son, who also has a 3540, bought TYG03 16x -R by mail order and he
burns them at 12x just to play it safe.
If you run Nero CD-DVD Speed application and burn with its data disc
creator, you will see the burn profile in graphical form. As you will
see, with CAV burns, the burner spends most of the time below 12x so
dropping from 16x MAX to 12x MAX adds so little time to the burn as to
be negligible. But that lower MAX is very important in getting
longevity out of DVD discs. Therefore it is recommended that you burn
TYG03 16x discs at 12x.
I am told on good authority that my 3540 prefers +R media. TY doesn't
make a 16x +R so 8x is as fast as you can get from TY. But the burn
time is not all that slower if you install LD1.W5 f/w hack which tells
the 3540 to do a CLV burn at 8x which is as fast as a CAV burn at 12x.
There is a lot more to this DVD burning business than a top-posting
newbie will ever figure out in a lifetime of struggling with MF4.
