That's silly. Hard drives are made to be used in any orientation.
It is one of the design requisites for their basic function.

Older drives had problems if they were formatted in one orientation,
and then had that orientation changed. They would exhibit read
failures. The fix was to return it to the original orientation.
Simple. Modern drives have ten times tighter mechanical tolerances.

Seagate in particular had to make drives under military contract.

You know... harsh environmental conditions...
