You won't find one with 'continously variable' [at least not from
what I've seen] but you can find that that play at 1, 1.5, 2, 3,
5 and 7 times speed - both forward in reverse - with good picture
and even sound. At 1.5 and 2 times you don't notice holes in the
sound but things just go faster. Above that there are little skips
in the audio.
What is bizarre the first time you see it on my machine - a JVC
9800 - is that you get audio when it plays in reverse.
That's because it has a 4MB buffer that is used for the variable
speed playback but also for built in NR and a small TBC.

I paid $325 for it refurbed about 3 years ago.
Current model is 9911 - and JVC lists it for $599.
Searches on the 'net show prices from about $375 and up.
It also has S-VHS ET - which means you get S-VHS quality on regular
VHS tapes.
They used to have 2MB buffers on some lower model numbers but those
aren't being made any more. Maybe you can find one used. I
screwed up and didn't buy when they were being closed out :-(
For a VHS machine it's really nice. Pictures almost as good
as my old Beta in Super-Beta I format, but a long way from
the ED-Betas.
