I'm not sure what model is in question here, but some have iLink input
as well. If that is the case, he could just output from his editind
software to the DVD recorder for the minimum of loss. I have a Philips
DVD recorder that permits this, and have never bothered with the
software authoring route. The DVD quality is outstanding when taken
directly from the computer or from a digital camcorder.
