JVC were the [joint] originators of VHS and made lots of good VCR's.

I have a ~nine year old JVC HR-J635, which was top of the range VHS then.
The slow motion is highly variable from ~half speed to frame advance and can
track backwards and forwards (jog).
The fast motion is less sophisticated with two speeds about 2.5 and 6 times
normal speed in either direction, depending on whether you press or press
and hold the wind buttons during play. Regular forward / rewind too (no
picture, but time indicator).
Control is servo, so you can change direction, just by pushing one button.
Was ~300 from Sound & Vision, Bolton.

I also have a broadly equivalent SVHS model (JVC HR-S6600) about two years
old, but its fast motion is not as clever as the VHS 635. Was 70 from
Morgan on remainder, about 10% of its original ticket.

OTOH I don't think many VCR's are made anymore especially clever ones.
