Consider a typical single layer DVD-5. It holds nominally 4 GB.

The typical file size of the AVI that shows up well is 350 MB. That's
one 45 minute episode. Throw in some overhead for the subtitles (which
are not present in typical AVIs) and you got no more than 400 MB.

That's ten episodes per DVD disc.

I need a recommendation for the definitive FAQ for AVI, MPEG4, DivX,
Xvid and all these newer compression schemes. While there are many
FAQs out there, the ones I have seen are too confused to be useful.

I want to take a DVD source and rework it into AVIs with subtitles
that are no larger than 400 MB. I want the resolution to be similar to
the original DVD. I can deal with lower resolution like Shrink at 50%.
 I believe that is 352x480.

 In terms of DVD resolutions:

 Mode Hour BitRate Encode NTSC
 HQ 1 9.5Mbps MPEG2 720X480
 SP 2 5.1Mbps MPEG2 720X480
 2.5 4.0Mbps 352x480
 LP 3 3.3Mbps MPEG2 352X480
 EP 4 2.5Mbps MPEG2 352X480
 SLP 6 1.7Mpbs MPEG1 352X240

I can deal with EP resolution at the lowest. Anything lower than EP
 starts to look crappy.

My DVDR will play non-compliant AVIs with higher resolution which are
still around 350 MB (but no subtitles).
