Hi,
My Sony KD-32DC11 WS TV or my Pioneer DV-444 DVD Player is cropping the
edge of a DVD movie, the 1997 (original) Norwegian movie Insomnia. I
wouldn't have noticed except that the first letter or two of the subtitles
is often lost on the left of the screen (the subtitles on this DVD are
further left than on most films). The movie is widescreen 16:9 aspect
ratio and the TV is also widescreen. The DVD player is setup to output to
a widescreen 16:9 TV. Everything is PAL Region 2.
When I tested the DVD by playing it on my PC using WinDVD everything was
as it should be, the subtitles were never cropped on the left and when I
compared the image on the TV and on the PC, the horizontal cropping was
noticeable. On the TV this cropping takes place regardless of what aspect
ratio I set the TV to; 4:3, wide, zoom, and smart all crop the image.
I can't think why this would happen. My investigations went as far as
loading one of the DVD's VOB files into some video format conversion
software, the excellent, Canopus ProCoder 2. This gives loads of info. on
the encoding of a video file. One bit said:
Video Frame Size: 720 x 576
Display Size: 540 x 576
This seems to suggest something is rotten. But it plays fine on my PC but
not on my TV !!
Any advice as to what is going on and how to resolve it would be great.
I'm worried this may have been happening with other DVDs without my noticing.
Many thanks and regards,
MS
