 An AVI converter.

AVI is a wrapper for MPEG-4, which can compress a 45 minute episode to
350 MB (1/2 CD) and maintain resolution on 19" viewers. I have seen
resolution as low as 233MB (1/3 CD) and it is as good as the original
DVD. Much lower and the picture starts degrading. 350MB is the most
 common resolution for bit torrents.

There are two competing codecs, one called DivX and the other XviD.
Almost all the bit torrents are AVI/XviD whether ripped from DVDs or
 captured from TV.

If your DVDR can play AVIs then you can put them on a Data DVD disc
and get an entire 20 episode season on two discs with 350MB
resolution. The savings in time and money are enormous. Authoring DVDs
is a time consuming process that gets very boring quickly. Copying
AVIs onto a Data DVD with Nero is simple.

I am trying to find an AVI converter that will preserve subtitles.
AutoGK will do that but the processing time is prohibitive unless you
have a high-speed dedicated machine you can turn on and let it do its
thing. I am not willing to make that committment at this stage.
