I have tried the ILO DVDR05ZU and it is not very good so I returned
it. It is being phased out so it may not even be on the shelf anymore.
The unit you want is the ILO DVDR05MU. There is an even newer model
coming to shelf soon if not already, DVDR05MU1.
NB: The DVDR05 is made by CyberHome - it is essentially their CH 1600,
Do not confuse it with the older DVDR04 which was made by Lite-On and
which received nothing but bad comments.
The first thing you need to do is get the latest firmware. Do not
install it unless you are confident the unit will stay on the whole
time - do not install during a storm when there's the possibility of a
power outage.
It will burn DVD +R/RW discs only. You may force it to do otherwise
but then you will end up whining like some of the people on that forum
referenced above.
Get Verbatim DVD +RW discs. Everything else is basically crap. This I
learned from ILO Tech Support - they recommend Verbatim despite what
you see on the Help screen.
As far as all the complaints on that forum, they are anecdotal and not
indicative of the actual performance of the latest units on the shelf.
But you should have 90 days to take the unit back, no questions asked
other than if it is defective. The units are massed produced, so you
have to decide if an extra trip to WalMart to exchange a factory
defect is worth paying only $99.
I have extensively tested the DVDR05MU with the latest F/W and it
works as it is supposed to. But then I have only had this particular
unit for less than a month, so time will tell if it holds up.
Besides the CH 1600 at Best Buy for $120, there is nothing in this
price range. The next range is over $200 and I have read the same kind
of negative reports about units in that range too.
If you want the best DVDR made, you have to cough up some real bucks
and get a Pioneer, so I am told by the experts. I am going to wait a
year for the DVD-HDD units to come out of infancy and get the ability
to record multiple programs at the same time.
