Watching one TV channel while recording another on DVD recorder

Is it possible to record , with a DVD recorder, a different channel to
the one you are watching? We have bought two DVD recorders and have
the found the same problem with both: we can only record the channel we
are actually watching. We have analogue TV, no satellite or set-top
boxes.
