According the the manual available on the Philips UK website[1] the
component input will accept (and up/downscale) SD and both flavours of
HD without a problem; thus my original advice remains: buy a $40 DVD
player with component (*NOT HDMI*) output for best quality. Save the
HDMI input on the TV for when you get a true high-definition device such
as a HD-DVD player.
