Sony RDR HX715 (160g HD, High Def - supposedly)

I am utterly confused after mining for information on this unit, both
on the web and at stores. Here are a couple of items from the
decriptions:

1) Selectable 480p/720p/1080i output via HDMI digital interface.

2) Selectable progressive-scan mode for smoother video with
HD-compatible TVs via the component video output (progressive scan mode
is playback only)

First of all, these two items almost seem contradictory.

I read one outraged review in which a gentleman went off on the
component video, saying Sony only allows it to work at 480. He also
went on to say that the HDMI is a sham because there is no way for DVRs
to transmit high-quality HD.

In any event, what can I expect from a unit such as this if I have an
HD television and I drop a recording into a disk or into its HD? Can I
really get something at 480 or better or is it all smoke and mirrors?

Alternatively, are there better units than this for its specs?
