Kenneth Anderson,
I've never owned a non-DIVX player but I have tried out hotel players or friends' players.
I think most non-DIVX players can play this:
a store-bought CD or DVD
a CD full of JPGs
a CD full of MP3s
a homemade DVD-R or DVD+R properly burnt with an NTSC movie.

In addition to these, the DVP-642 will play:
a CD full of AVIs or MPGs or ASFs or WMVs
a DVD-R or DVD+R full of JPGs, MP3s, or AVI/MPG/ASF/WMV
a CD or DVDR with a mix of these files

However, a DVD with 4488 MB of MP3s is a lot of files. It is kinda sluggish browsing though
them. But it plays through them just fine. It doesn't have a seamless option where each file
stops and the next one starts so that my mess up mixtapes or concert playback. Also, my
biggest annoyance is the 11 character file name display limit. Also, I think ASF and WMV
playback is iffy, but I can't blame it for that. I avoid those too.

cbikes.
I guess your side-by-side playback is a comparison with a real DVD and not an AVI. I don't
have anything that I can do a comparison with and I can't remember playing a real DVD in it
either. But I do know that good AVIs look really good and okay AVIs look okay. I've never seen
something like you describe. My DVP-642 is a couple of years old and it is hooked to an older
CRT TV with just the analog cable it comes with.
