AVI is not a video format by itself, it is only a container or wrapper
that contains some kind of Audio & Video, Interleaved. The audio and
video can be encoded by any of a number of codecs, such as DivX or a
flavor of MPEG-4. So the relationship you asked about is that an AVI
can be a DivX file, or MPEG-4, or any of dozens and dozens of other
formats. When a video file is only described as AVI, you'll have no
idea what format it's in until you examine it more closely.
