Yesterday I purchased a Sony DVD Recorder (model RDRH710). It has a hdd and
DVD.
I noticed when I turned it on, that the fan immediately turns on, and stays
on. It's not loud, but it isn't quiet either. (I am only used to silent
equipment - only having had a VCR player that only makes a sound when it is
recording/playing (and not much sound at that).
Hence to reduce to almost no noise I need to shut both glass doors in the
video cabinet.
Have you found that the fan on your DVD recorder is quite audible?
I noticed that there were also no vents on the Sony - the only way the heat
can be dispersed is through the fan.
So my questions.
Do you know if there are any DVD recorders where the fan isn't consistently
running?
Do other DVD recorders have air vents on the sides/top of the recorder, or
are they completely sealed?
From a safety issue, if I went on holiday for a period of time, let's say 3
weeks and set the recorder to record numerous shows, and the unit overheated
(due to say the fan failing, or because the unit had been running for too
long), do you think it could destroy the dvd recorder, or worse cause a
fire? Or is there some built in protection that would prevent this.
There is no built in protection in a computer, if the fan dies, it is going
to do some/or alot of damage. Also computers have air vents (and lots of
air vents!!!) to cool the system down. They aren't in a completely sealed
box relying on a fan.
I would really appreciate your opinions on this.
I am debating whether to return the unit.
I also bought a Sony DVD/VCR combo - SLVD985 - to copy my VHS tapes to DVD,
and that isn't that great either. It is noisier than my old Mitsubishi VCR
player, and the DVD player will only play PAL (not NTSC)
Also for some reason the remote control on the RDRHX710 has kaput itself -
only sort of worked for about 5 minutes (it's not the batteries - tried them
on another remote and works fine). Also the remote for the DVD/VCR combo
won't turn the machine off (I have to physically hit the on/off button on
the machine) - could this be failing too?
