Pioneer drives have always been picky about media. My first PC DVD-R
drive was a Pioneer A02? Anyway, it was a 2x DVD-R drive, one of the
early ones. Thing is it would burn virtually nothing at 2x other than
Pioneer and maybe a few other brands. You could slap a 8x DVDR in there
and sure enough, 1x only. Firmware upgrades and hacks never worked for
me, but that was years ago. I eventually got a lite-on which will burn
anything at just about any speed. (Filthy slut!)
Before buying media its best to consult the media quality guide. It's a
bit old now but i still find it to be reasonably accurate

Many of your name brand discs are actually crap quality which will
cause problems in picky recorders like Pioneers. I'm not a big sony fan
but their blanks are one of the best rated and i haven't had any
problems with them thus far. There also doesn't appear to be too much
rhyme or reason to compatibility. My Pioneer stand-alone players and
recorders for instance have issues sometimes playing back DVD-Rs, but
work perfectly fine with DVD+Rs which is rather ironic all things
considered (Pioneer pushes -R)
