Thanks for that - ephpod looks just the thing.
One final final question - I promise: the website for ephpod says you use a
firewire cable for the transfer - does that mean the standard cable that
comes with an iPod? You will have to forgive me for the dumb questions but I
don't own an iPod - I am just going to sort out someone's problem
