Sorry Region coding is all about mechanical copyright a branch of the law
not too many people are familiar with. There are 3 levels of copyright on a
CD musical item as an example:
1. Mechanical copyright is owned by the manufacturer of the disc
2. Artistic property - what the artist gets
3. Composer copyright
In the case of hardware like DVD players the copyright and patents owners of
the user product i.e. the DVD discs set up a regime to control the way
marketing would take place creating differential costing based on what the
local market could bear - so the same item marketed in the USA would have a
lower unit price due to the bigger market and consumer resistance, in South
America the selling price is a lot lower to reflect the lower salaries etc
and on it goes - it is a stupid concept because the World is getting
smaller and many people traverse the World taking their goods and chattels
with them, people like myself maintain residences in 2 countries and I will
be damned if I am going to maintain 2 inventories of every book and CD I
own.. So yes it is all linked into control, copyright and patents law.
