Well, there are two aspects to the movie. 1) the film, 2) the subject
matter.
1) If you're a film fan, you can't fail to like BBM. Beautifully shot,
lovingly directed, great characterisation. Everything you'd want from a
movie. I'd say, like most of his films it's about half an hour too
long. It would benefit from a speedy editor. But if you dig long,
lingering looks at picturesque scenery - you'll probably disagree with me.
2) The subject matter is as old as time itself - forbidden love. I'd
simply ask you if you'd even ask this question if the story was between
a black man and a white woman? Between a catholic and protestant? A
Capulet and Montague?
I went to see it in a fairly "chavvy" cinema and was expecting a lot of
whispered "eurgh! That's so ghey huh huh!" comments. There were none.
Don't worry - you're not going to see anything more explicit than French
Kissing - this ain't Baise Moi.
If you like well done, character driven films, you'll like this. It's
not gay propaganda. Saying you shouldn't see it in a cinema because
there might be a gay guy sat next to you who is overcome with lust that
he has to take you there and then, is like saying you shouldn't take
your kids to see Harry Potter, because a pedophile might be in the cinema.
It's worth watching and, no, it won't turn you into the only gay on your
sofa.
