Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of JOHN AND ABIGAIL ADAMS, LA BETE
HUMAINE: CRITERION COLLECTION, THE MEMORY OF A KILLER, NETWORK: SPECIAL
EDITION, PIN-UP GIRL, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, RED EYE, RENT, and YOUNG MR.
LINCOLN: CRITERION COLLECTION:

JOHN AND ABIGAIL ADAMS (reviewed by Mike Pinsky, overall score 86/100):
"The John Adams we meet is insecure, so worried about his place in
history that he jealously fights with Benjamin Franklin, ends up in a
bitter election campaign with Thomas Jefferson (who admittedly fought
pretty dirty), and prompts Alexander Hamilton to call him deranged."

LA BETE HUMAINE: CRITERION COLLECTION (reviewed by Steve Evans, overall
score 95/100):
"La Bete Humaine contains several scenes of such tightly-coiled suspense
that it is not possible to watch without wondering how often Hitchcock
held private screenings of the picture for his own education."

THE MEMORY OF A KILLER (reviewed by James A. Stewart, overall
score 88/100):
"Although it starts out looking like a Memento clone, the movie finds
its own, more human voice as it explores the relationship between Eric
and Ledda, while staying close enough to the oddball familiar to please
fans of Christopher Nolan's stylish thrillers."

NETWORK: SPECIAL EDITION (reviewed by Bill Gibron, overall score
97/100):
"There are several standout spoken set pieces, not just the instances
where Beale goes ballistic for his nightly news tirades. When the
obviously insane newsman tells his audience to go to the windows and
yell out that seminal statement of stagnant citizenry, 'I'm as mad as
hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!,' the words leading up to the
chant are far more effective than the catchphrase itself."

PIN-UP GIRL (reviewed by James A. Stewart, overall score 82/100):
"Attached to an effervescent actress, even in a caricature of a role,
Grable's legs still brighten a gloomy day enough that you can easily see
how much she contributed to the war effort."

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (reviewed by Brett Cullum, overall score 92/100):
"You will fall in love with Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), and in the end
that's enough to recommend the film. It's not often we get to see an
actress burst in to full bloom with such rich material serving her."

RED EYE (reviewed by Mike Pinsky, overall score 93/100):
"The speed and precision of Craven's direction allows those moments to
slip by without looking forced. At a taut running time of 76 minutes
(not including end credits), Craven has no patience for the usual
Hollywood foolishness. If only more bloated blockbusters showed this
much self-control."

RENT (reviewed by Brett Cullum, overall score 97/100):
"Rent is all about living and loving the moment you're in, and
celebrating every personal triumph despite the circumstances. It's all
about measuring life not by money, but by friends and love."

YOUNG MR. LINCOLN: CRITERION COLLECTION (reviewed by Joe Armenio,
overall score 96/100):
"This is a movie which is obsessed with the passage of time, with loss
and with memory (both personal and historical), exploring these themes
with a grace and power unknown to many theoretically more self-conscious
films. It is meant as a sort of national home movie, a sad glance at a
time forever gone, both more innocent and retrospectively rich with
foreshadowing, pregnant with the disasters to come."
