I agree. (although your "nasty gay porn" is a stranger to me)
I'm unlikely to settle down with a tub of popcorn to watch
emotional dramas of any ilk, but usually end up transifixed when I do.
(Hollow event movies & classic escapism are my usual cup o' tea)
BM was no different - well scripted, stunning scenery, terrific
performances (mainly) & no more manipulative than, say, The
Bridges of Madison County.
What I've found pleasantly surprising is that most of the
guys I work alongside have seen it (like me,with wives/girlfriends)
& comfortably acknowledge having enjoyed the movie.
The only people who seem convinced the average male
is antagonistic to the gay aspect of the plot are the blinkered
chattering classes who perpetuate these 2-dimensional myths.
The tent tomfoolery made me a wee bit uneasy maybe, but
hardly on the same level as 'Velvet Goldmine' or
'My Beautiful Laundrette'.
