Often it's not too long to sit through but too long for the
theatre. If the movie is long there are fewer showing per day,
thus the lower box-office, which isn't that big, but a much larger
fall off in concessions as it's one theatre full of people who
aren't there to buy something.
And making $3+ from a tub of popcorn is a real money make
considering the cost. Same for the soft drinks.
The movie is just used to get people to come to buy overpriced
snacks :-).
Some movies moreso than others.
