For a typical rock concert where you're worried about overdriving your
camera mic and you can't attenuate it, what you really want to do is
have an external compressor inline (a battery powered effect pedal will
do in a pinch) inline and an external mic so you can do a couple of
sound checks and compensate for the levels a bit. Then you can always
expand and manipulate the audio later as long as you've got clean signal
on the master recording. Once you've got overdriven/clipped audio,
you're stuck with it.
