The functionality is built right into FCP.
If the clip you want to export is already on a timeline, just double
click it to load it into the viewer window - then select EXPORT from the
FILE menu and choose "Using Quicktime Conversion" - AVI is one of the
default selections.
If you want more control or if you have a large batch of files you want
to convert, use the BATCH EXPORT function under the FILE menu. (you need
to select clips in the browser window for batch export to work, but if
they're on the timeline, just create a new bin in the browser and drag
the clips from the timeline into that folder. Then you can select the
clips and batch process them)
The Batch Export function allows you to set both the file type AND the
compression type you need. Dig around the menus and you'll discover it's
pretty easy to convert any clip in FCP into any other common file type
in a few simple clicks.
