If I already had scart for six years - and that was by no means one of the
earliest models - then a very large percentage of the broader population
must have had scart by the time DVD came out.

Hardly. If you read my grandfather's book you will see it ties-in with
everything I stated in the thread you quoted below. In particular the name
of his eldest son Anton-Frederik (my father) who prefers to be referred to
simply as "Fred".

If you read my grandfather's book you'll see that my father has an even less
likely occupation. That doesn't make it less true.
