When DVD was first introduced, the players were backward compatible when
playing anamorphic DVDs. People with TVs incapable of doing vertical
compression could use the player's down-conversion mode.
With that in mind, will the new HD DVD players allow someone with an analog
TV to watch down-converted HD DVDs? In other words, could this person
upgrade to HD DVDs without having to immediately upgrade to an HD TV?
So far, I have heard no discussion of this matter. The only backward
compatibility issue that I have heard discussed is whether or not the new HD
DVD players will also play standard DVDs.
