I went to see this today. I really enjoyed what's there of it, but... er...
is that it?
I generally don't like to discuss "plot points" when talking about a movie,
but in this case I'll make an exception...
<*** START OF PLOT DESCRIPTION***>
Ed Murrow decides to run a story on McCarthyism... they get their facts
together and then they show the programme. He has a nice way with
words -clearly a million times more insightful than anything available
nowadays.
Then a few weeks later Senator McCarthy lashes out at Murrow in the only way
he knows how... by throwing any kind of half-mud he can find.
Then the following week, Murrow points out that none of the Senator's points
had any relevance to anything Murrow was talking aobut.
Then we hear that the Senator is being investigated. ...The End.
(More or less)
<*** END OF PLOT DESCRIPTION***>
I loved the insight into television at the time -and CBS in particular. The
acting and design, etc. were all perfect.
The tale itself was intriguing... but by including only the bits relevant to
those few shows, I think it kind of comes across as a too-obvious morality
play that is designed merely to take a pot-shot at the current
administration, rather than to make a real-good film... thus losing the
impact it was trying to make in the first place.
....That said, I thoroughly enjoyed what _is_ there. I wish they expanded it
a bit. I can't believe it was 93 minutes long... It seemed like an hour at
most!
I also wish I had waited and bought the region 1 dvd instead (out now),
because it was shown out of focus all the way through and I didn't want to
get up to complain and miss more of the show... and I arrived 2 minutes
after the advertised-time and wouldn't you know it was the first time *EVER*
there were no ads on beforehand -so I missed the goddamned start... and I
*HATE* that!!
-Kevin.
