I find the animation part of Lightwave very intuitive and easy to pick
up in an hour or two.
The Modeling side, not so much:-)
For commercials, they often take it a step further than the regular
applications already mentioned: staff programmers often write custom
shaders and plug-ins for things like hair and cloth simulation and
better dynamic representation of things like fluid dynamics and the
like. After a year or two, those custom plug-ins trickle down to the
rest of us.
If this stuff grabs you: you can try free versions of many of the
programs mentioned here. Other programs are priced for consumers, like
poser, bryce, and others. In 2-d cel animation, Moho and toonboom are
great tools for access by the masses. www.turbosquid.com is a place you
can download free or cheap pre-made models you can then animate.
