I don't think there is a big speed difference, although I never really
tested it, and my memory has its flaws :-)

I like external drives because they are external. To be just a touch
clearer - if some strange event fries everything in the computer case,
you could easily lose the backup drive too. The external drive has a
chance of being unplugged and unpowered when that happens, and thus
surviving the event. If your house burns down, then just hope it
happens while the external drive is at your brother-in-law's house.

I also like that I can back up my partner's computer today and my
computer tomorrow, as long as the drive is big enough to hold her data
and my data...
