DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are mainstays, but they are not being
developed anymore. Thank the greedy prick lawyers at the entertainment
companies. If your DVDR can play AVIs, then get Auto Gordian Knot and
convert with XviD codec, burn as data files. All are free and well
supported with active forums.
The next quantum leap has already begun to MPEG4/AVI/XviD. A standard
single layer single sided DVD will hold 6 hours of content at VCR
resolution, which is decent enough for 19" viewscreens. After cleaning
the videos of commercials that gives you eight 42-minute episodes. If
you convert to 175 MB AVIs, you can get 24 of the same resolution
videos on the 1 disc. That's an entire season of episodes. If you
prefer the more conventional 350 MB per 42-min resolution (like most
TV torrents), then you can get 1/2 season on 1 DVD.
You can get an ILO DVDR05MU1 from WalMart for $99. Get the 610 f/w
from tech support at ILO/Cyberhome and you can play AVI/XviDs.
