Not a direct answer, but some things to consider - there's a forum for
the 8400X, on <http://www.my-yamada.co.uk/phpBB/index.php>
You'll only actually see the dedicated forum once you've registered and
logged in, though.
Also, there's a loader firmware upgrade from Yamada - which includes
more compatibility for media.
And lastly, numerous people on the forum have upgraded the players
firmware (ie not just the drive loader) by using a version distributed
for a rebadged version of the 8400X, sold in Spain (Blu:sens).
And now that you've made me think about it, the only RW disks I've used
in my 8400X, are Philips - can't remember their speed rating, though,
but I think they are 4x (not that it's of significance when used on the
8400X).
