IMO it will eventually replace DVD but not quickly. There have been a
few competing formats against VHS over the last 20 or so years that
never took hold like CED and Laserdisks. Lasers were far superior to
VHS but it didn't really get hold in most market due to high cost.
Unless BR's or HD's sells at price comparable to current DVD (about
$50 for basic player, not more than $20 for most movies) it will not
sell well.
Also there's a good chance that the new players would be backward
compatible with current DVD so you don't need multiple players for
viewing older and newer discs. Pretty much the same way current DVD
players can also play existing CD-ROMs even though both CD and DVD
used different laser wavelength.
Infared for CD, visible red for DVD, and visible blue for next gen
discs. At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if before 2010 rolls
around they are touting the latest player that employees short
wavelength UV laser on a 5" disc that holds 1 TB per layer.
