DVDPlayers when introduced were $1000. I bought my Sony DVP-s7000 for
about $1200. That was around 1997 IIRC. I recall that even a few
months later, there was a lower end Sony for about $600. I'm sure if
you were looking at video then, it would have been "outrageous."
Ditto HDTV. HOWEVER, it really is about time for tv signals to go
digital. The difference is VHS and DVD. Alot of people didn't see the
big deal about DVD until they got it. Then they realized that they
couldn't "go back to VHS."
Now, on the plus side, when the TV signals do go to purely digital, you
won't have to chuck your tv. You can buy a D-to-A converter box and
stil watch OTA tv. In fact, the US Gov't might even just GIVE you one
(at a total expense of abotu $3B). If you are going to watch cable,
you'll have to get (rent?) a STB to convert if you don't already.
Still, the price is not too terrible. If you have no desire to see
high def signal, no need to buy an HDTV.
The people I really feel bad for are the ones that bought the HDTVs
recently that didn't have HDMI (or HDCP), b/c they won't be getting the
HD signal thru analog or via DVI without HDCP.
