This is only cheap compared to UK prices. Record companies try to fix
prices in different territories - see the case of them getting CDWow
to stop importing Hong Kong CDs into the UK because they were too
cheap and the record companies were worried they wouldn't be able to
gouge as much profit from the UK market - these were CDs legally sold
in HK with royalties paid. In Russia people can't afford £10 for a CD
so music is much cheaper - this is reflected in the price of the
tracks. 7c a track does not seem cheap to me - recording equipment is
available to every teenager in his bedroom (indeed several recent
chart hits have literally been recorded in someone's bedroom for
basically no cost) and the distribution costs on the internet are
basically zero. Record companies need to embrace this need technology
instead of fearing it.
