"Murmur of the Heart inaugurated a new phase in Malle's career. The
picture is a bildungsroman, but that's not the only thing that makes it
feel like a shockingly potent debut -- as a matter of fact, it's not

and subject-matter typically found in the work of a young artist flexing
his muscles."

cinematic technique."
