Why would you cringe watching a professional comedian telling jokes on
a comedy show, Dave Spikey is a seasoned stand up comic after all. I
have heard a lot of his stand up stuff recently and it is really quite
funny, not ground breaking but still funny.
The stuff he does on 8 out of 10 is funny, I don't know why you bother
watching TV comedy shows when you obviously have very selective tastes.

And actually it isn't canned laughter it is a live studio audience, I
went to the taping of one episode once, completely hillarious. The
stuff they cut out was too much for telly and funnier than the stuff
they left in. The taping took over 2 hours for 22 minutes of aired
material.

Peter Kay does use his family a lot in his stand up but that is what
you would call observational humour and who do you observe most? the
people closest to you. Billy Connolly has done umpteen routines about
his youth and family but that is ok because he is Billy C and you like
him.

If you like Sean Locke then check out 15 Stories High his much
underrated and underpromoted TV series (Is series 2 on DVD yet?) it
was a bit like Peep Show that just appeared and was a completely new
type of show that wasn't comparible to anything else about.
