This is the way I did it... First mistake is buying a all-in-one
unit like you did. Should have separate units, but all may not be
lost. I have a DVD Recorder and a separate VHS recorder. I used a
Pioneer DVD-R and a Panasonic DVD-R, both worked fine.
The trick was putting a GoDVD from Sima on the video signal between
the VCR and DVD Recorder. This takes away the protection signal from
the pre-recorded tape and allows duplication. I have dubbed almost a
hundred tapes, and all have gone over without a problem.
If your combo unit has separate inputs for the DVD Recorder portion,
and you can record from that input, get a separate VHS player, and try
it out on one of your home tapes first. If it works, then get a GoDVD
and you should be able to do all the copying you need. The GoDVD may
also allow you to capture the signals on your PC as well. What it
removes is the Macrovision signal which rides in on the video signal.
Which brand and model combo did they get?
I got mine from tigerdirect.com which had one of the best prices on
it when I bought it.
