There was a discussion on this group fairly recently re: the fact that
archiving stuff to dvd may not have as long a life span as tape.
National Videotape tells me that people like Comcast who are
converting to DVD are doing so on their highest grade dvd media.

As far as brands go I was first using Maxell and had good success with
it. I tried Fuji for one of my jobs and had a huge amount of failures
with it. Funny as my brand of choice for tape is Fuji and I generally
don't like Maxell tape. I found that it dirties up my tape heads
quickly - what the tape folks refer to as dusty tape. Only other
comment re: tape is I wouldn't use TDK if you gave me a ton of it
free.

I switched to Taiyo Yuden dvd stock and it is much cheaper than what I
was paying for Maxell and I have found it to be a very good product.
Very few failures. I can buy blank dvd media from National for as
cheap as .20 each but I won't use them. I pay .50 for the Taiyo and
you don't have to replace many discs for customers to quickly use up
the savings from going with cheaper discs.

Hopefully this info is of some help to you.
