Odds are it may not be able to control your DVD recorder. Some have a
jack on the back that you can connect a small IR emitter on a cord that
you can place in front of the VCR.
What model cable box is it (if there is no name on front, look for
labels on the bottom), and what cable system? For Comcast and others
using I-Guide (usually has a TVGuide logo, and the default display color
is mostly blue), I believe it supports a record option even if it's not
a DVR model. It will turn on and tune to the channel at the selected
time.
