In fact, YOU aren't everyone, or are you saying you speak for everyone?
You seem to have paranoid fear of companies (or are maybe just a HDDVD
plant), and cannot imagine that in a market society, consumers will
reject features if they don't want them - companies have the mandate to
try to provide more services and capitalize on them.
I'll point out however, that many people also were very adamant about
not having more functionalities in their phones. And yet, now we have a
situation where most phones today HAVE peripheral features on them and
people want them.

the fact you are so very hostile about other people's work and hobbies
sure do seem weird (and suspicious).

And you'll get all that. The added features are there if you want them.
NO ONE is going to force you to buy merchandize, or download appas and
games, or download subtitles in german, or chinese, or whatever.
people have a CHOICE.
Blu-ray, by having more interactivity than HDDVD (a real one trick pony
IMO), will provide the consumers CHOICES.
