A poor judgement call is when you miscalculate the market and price
your products incorrectly.

Evil is when you decide that your objectives are more important than
the rights of your customers and act on that decision.

Arrogance is when you think (and state publicly) that your customers
are too stupid to tell the difference.

There is no other kind of software of any complexity.

It was lousy because it was poorly written. But if it had
been perfectly written with no flaws, it would still have
been _evil_ because it was intended to hide itself from the
owner of the computer and from other software on the computer.

Why is it so hard for you to see the difference?

If a significant fraction of content suppliers set the
screw-your-customers flag, the value of the player is reduced. Sony,
by itself, supplies a significant fraction of the expected content.

And that's enough of a reason for me not to buy any HD disc player
until that significant fault is corrected.

Your money - your choice. If you don't care that the decision was made
to punish early adopters, and want to reward that decision with your
money, fine.

>Really, some people need to just get over it.

I have gotten over it. I've gotten over trusting Sony until Sony
gets a clue about who owns the products it sells and the products they
interact with.

You may believe that the lack of trustworthiness of a company whose
promises are critical to the value of a product is irrelevant. I
don't.

No. More like "All proposed HD video players suck because one of the
major content providers (Sony) may be lying about its intentions.

Every high def display device _is_a_computer_. A dvd player (high def
or not) _is_a_computer_. Trusting the operation of any computer to a
company (Sony) which believes that rootkitting is justified is like
having your taxes done by a corporation which includes identity theft
in its official business plan.

But more to the point: Buying a product (Blu-ray or otherwise) whose
value depends to any significant degree on the promises of a company
(Sony) that thinks rootkitting is justified is like buying a car
whose sticker includes the phrase "Prepared by the Deception
Department."

The rootkit fiasco told anyone paying attention that deceiving
customers to meet corporate objectives is OK with Sony
as long as it is done well.
