ok, i'll admit that i'm not a videophile, and i'm one who could care
less about high definition...but i know my brother is a gadget freak,
and he has no problems buying expensive stuff just because of some
perceived quality difference, so there is some market for these
formats.
but my business mind says these companies are stupid for thinking the
mass of people will trade in their $40 DVD players for ones that cost
several hundreds, so i'm assuming these guys are first targeting the
high-end buyers and slowly ratcheting down the price as time passes
(due to volume efficiencies) to pull in the economy buyers who'd like
to get more bang for their buck when they get those HDTVs.
in other words, they're preparing for the future knowing that these are
low-volume, high-margin (?) items for now.
