i agree with the don't fix it idea if it's working great. our g5 that broke
support couldn't figure out what was wrong and told us to take it to a
repair station, and gave us an address that was about 125 miles away. we
looked up our own and found one just shy of 100 miles. however, it was our
mistake to take it there because even though they had signs in the window
advertising apple and mac software/computers, upon finilizing the repair,
the manufacture wouldn't cover the warranty even though it was within the
repair period because (as they put it) we took it to a dealer which they did
not send us too AND that although the dealer is an authorized repair
station, the dealer ISN"T an autorized warranty repair station.

i was sooooooooooo upset i nearly had a cat, personally. i paid the bill
and began the 6 investigation for easier, more localy, and more open door
opportunities, and when we expanded our operation and brought in two more
stations, they were pc's with avid software, let alone, we replaced the g5's
with two more pc's. in addition, we've since added one more and it's all
running on a network hub that was purchased at Staples, let alone, we have a
brand new spare "in the box" that we got from Wally World (wal-mart) so that
we can be up and running in minutes instead of weeks like the apple/mac
solution.

we can now put in another station for under $4,000 with hot dual processor
motherboard (or dual core) and software licenses. i just wished i had
explored the market more and "learned" before making the decision to go
apple/mac. my team told me not to go mac, but eveything i heard said that
it was the way to go. then i went to the conventions and met the guys in
the rank and file and learned otherwise, that is the guys that are not in
the mainline houses, but the guys that are in the rut getting the
sub-contracts from the apple/mac studios, and there is where i found our
solutions and learned that 86+% of all holloywood movies and primetime
television were produced using Avid software technology . . not final cut
pro like we were informed and thought.

thus, we made the switch and have been very pleased.

You really have to look at the big picture.

1) So the PC guys in your area didn't know how to put a drive in the
Mac or refused to try. It's really not that difficult and there's
nothing proprietary about them. Shame. I would have been glad to have
the business and learned what I needed to learn (Big stretch) to
support your needs.

2) While you may be at a disadvantage if you're not in a major
marketplace, the fact is the Mac repair rate is the lowest in the
industry and has been for years. Phone support is always available for
OS issues, what few there are.

3) They are easier to use if you're starting from ground zero. If you
are unfamiliar with Mac and accustomed to using PC's it certainly isn't
going to seem easier. Anything new has a learning curve.

4) You're only looking at the short-term cost. The IT in maintaining
a PC network normally runs 25-400% higher on a PC network for a number
of reasons - more conflicts, more freuqent hardware failures,
susceptibility to viruses and spyware, security issues etc.

Still I say, i you're happy with Windows and it ain't broke, don't fix
it.
