Well your problem is you bought a DvD camera:-) This adds someconversion steps that will make anybody upset.
Does it not have a firewire port on it? I'm going to assume no.

If you want to keep it relatively simple, regardless of platform, drop
another $300 on a ADVC-100 converter. Play the camcorder or your DVD
player out to the converter, which turns it into DV on the fly, and
sends it into your editing computer by firewire. Then use any of the
free or low-costs editing systems in the normal fashion.

Or for that same $300, buy a Dv camcorder that uses tape, and has
analog-in and firewire-out: you can chain it to the DVD camcorder
instead of the converter, and use it as the converter, or just ditch
the DVD camcorder for lesser projects that don't need editing later. it
would also be handy sometmes to shoot things with two cameras at once.
 and edit between them.
