You're kidding right? Who in their right mind would throw down the money
for an expensive HD player just so they could view it on their old
analog television? That's COMPLETELY defeating the purpose of these new
formats! Doh.

You're missing the point entirely. Everyone knows the VHS market has
shrunken down to the size of a cockroach. DVD player penetration is
pretty close to what VCR penetration was at it's PEAK back in the mid
1990s. Everyone and their grandma has a fucking DVD player now.
YET(<--that being the keyword here) many of the movie studios continue
to support VHS here in the year 2006, nearly 10 years after the
introduction of DVD! Why do they? Beats the fuck out of me. Surely they
can't be making more than a bag of peanuts in sales or rentals on the
damn things these days, but none-the-less some studios(like the
aformentioned Universal) keep chugging the old, obsolete things out. Not
to mention VHS tapes are much more complex and costly to manufacture
than an optical disc. So please tell, why in the blue hell would movie
studios keep supporting VHS long after the market for it has disapated,
but abandon DVD when there's still a huge demand for it? Just so they
can try to "force" us to upgrade to HD? Sorry, I don't buy it. The movie
studios aren't stupid enough to alienate the customer like that.
Especially when it's getting easier and easier every day to illegally
download movies...
